Moving the range two feet so the sink and the stove stop fighting each other feels like a layout tweak. If the range is gas, that tweak is a new pipe route, a shutoff you can reach, and usually a permit. If you also change the cabinet that hides the connection, the electric outlet for the igniter has to move with it.

Modern Kitchen San Diego does not move gas lines. We refer independent remodelers. Who is allowed to do the gas work is a license question. Check the classification on the license you are offered at cslb.ca.gov. This page does not name a class number.

Find the shutoff before you design around it

The shutoff is often in the cabinet next to the range, behind a drawer, or in the basement or crawlspace if the house has one. Some older installations are hard to reach once the new drawer bank is drawn on a plan. Tell the remodeler you want the shutoff reachable after the kitchen is finished, not only during construction.

Do not cap or swing a gas line yourself to “see if the layout works.” That is the trade’s job. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility’s emergency line from outside. Do not look for the leak with a flame.

Photograph the existing connection with the range pulled out, if you can do that safely and the range is made to roll. Note whether the pipe comes from the wall, the floor, or an adjacent cabinet. Those three routes lead to three different cabinet designs.

Permit and the city

A gas move is the kind of work cities ask to see. The City of San Diego Development Services number is 619-446-5000. Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Escondido, and the other cities in the county each have their own counter. Ask the remodeler which jurisdiction is on your permit and who pulls it. “We’ll take care of it” is not a name.

The bid should say the gas move is included or excluded. If it is excluded, you are hiring a second company, and the cabinet install has to wait on that company’s schedule. Write that sequence down before demo day.

Induction is not a free shortcut

Dropping gas so you can avoid the pipe is a real option. It swaps the gas problem for an electrical one. An induction range needs a circuit the panel may not have. Read the panel page on this site and have an electrician look before you sell yourself on a smoother layout.

You can also keep the range where it is and fix the workflow with the sink, the prep space, or the landing on either side of the cooktop. Not every awkward kitchen needs the appliance to move. Ask the remodeler to price the layout you want and the layout that leaves the gas stub alone. We do not set those prices. Seeing both scopes is how you choose.

What to say when you call

Leave your city, say the range is gas, and say whether you want it moved or you are only exploring it. The line at (858) 400-4913 plays a recording notice, then connects. We try to match you with an independent remodeler who can bring the right trade. Your contract is with that remodeler.
